Road trip has special significance for Locomotives coach

Shuart Stadium, Hofstra University, Hempstead, N.Y.</p><p>Broadcast: Versus, Cable channel 38 and HD on 738</p><p> Las Vegas Locomotives coach Jim Fassel has been looking forward to this weekÕs game from the day the United Football League set the schedule for its inaugural season.</p><p>When the Locomotives travel to New York to take on the Sentinels today, itÕs a homecoming for Fassel, who coached the New York Giants for seven years.</p><p>ÒNew York is near and dear to my heart,Ó Fassel said. ÒThe people here were outstanding to me. I was treated extremely well by everyone — the media, the fans and people in the community.Ó</p><p>Under Fassel, the Giants were 60-56-1 from 1997-2003. Fassel has vivid memories of the 2000 season, which ended with New York losing to the Baltimore Ravens, 34-7, in Super Bowl XXXV.</p><p>Specifically, Fassel remembers the NFC championship game that year against the Minnesota Vikings.</p><p>He said he had never been in a building with as much energy as Giants Stadium that night, when the Giants beat the Vikings, 41-0.</p><p>ÒAfter the game, nobody left,Ó Fassel said. ÒThe place was packed. I got a letter from a guy who said his son said, ÔDad, you want to get out of here and beat the traffic?Õ He told his son, ÔNo, you donÕt ever get to experience this. This is a one-time opportunity to see this.Õ Ó</p><p>Although the Giants fired Fassel after a rough 2003 season, he said he has no hard feelings.</p><p>ÒNew York can be tough. I saw a lot of guys go as coaches and managers in sports in New York over my time,Ó he said. ÒBut ... I never had an incident with anyone.
